Pro-Choice Caucus Chair DeGette Supports New Title X Lawsuits Filed Against the Trump Administration

May 2, 2018

DENVER – The Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus voiced its strong support for the lawsuits filed today by Planned Parenthood and the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Associationagainst the Trump administration on behalf of the Title X program, which provides access for reproductive health care, including birth control, nationwide.

"More than four million people depend on Title X, which is guaranteed by law, and yet the Trump administration is trying to undermine that law, which would be devastating for women and families," said Congresswoman Diana DeGette (D-CO), who chairs the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus. "It is thanks to Title X that health care providers can offer a variety of family planning services – such as contraception, cancer screening and STD testing – to people who need them most.

"The administration's attempted rollback of Title X is just one of many ways in which women's reproductive health is under attack in this country, from cuts to funding for Teen Pregnancy Prevention programs to the never-ending cycle of congressional efforts to end federal support for Planned Parenthood," DeGette added. "Ironically and sadly, these efforts undermine programs that help prevent unintended pregnancy and help women avoid altogether the difficult choice of whether to have an abortion. Each woman should have access to reproductive health care and be able to make her own decisions about it with dignity and respect—and without politicians, employers, or anyone else interfering."

The lawsuits aim to reverse an effort the Trump administration launched in late February to remake the Title X program to make it harder for patients to access the full range of contraceptive methods, as well as comprehensive sex education.
